It’s only when it comes to Christmas, you realise how many people who live and work in the city aren’t actually from here. It’s a world city that brings people from all over the country and abroad to seek their fortune or climb the career ladder. However, when it comes to the few days over Christmas, they flee the Big Smoke to their hometowns and family hearths. Following the mass exodus from the capital over the past few days, the city is a much quieter place… which I must confess, I love. Having grown up in London, I have spent nearly every Yuletide of my existence in the city and hope to continue doing so as I grow older, because it’s my home. On Christmas Eve today I went into the West End armed with my camera and wallet to pick up some last-minute presents, food and drink and soak up the festive atmosphere. Lots of restaurants and bars had closed, but those that were open were bustling full of shoppers – mostly men I noticed 😉 – stopping for a refreshment before the panic buying resumed.
