Summer is here at last and what a bumper month of events are on in the capital. Of course, the big event is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which will see an extra long Bank Holiday weekend from 2-4 June, with a host of royal-themed celebrations on around town. There’s also half-term holidays from school the first week of June so parents will be searching for ways to keep their little ones occupied.
Aside from Platinum Jubilee fun, expect to see immersive experiences, the return of foodies’ paradise Taste of London and a host of arts festivals.

Canalway Cavalcade returns to Little Venice
Spring is in full swing and the sunshine is really becoming a regular around town… thank goodness! This month, there’s only one bank holiday (2 May) as the later one has been bumped later to 2-3 June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. There’s also half-term holidays for kids from 30 May – 3 June.

Exploring the stories behind the art | Inspired! exhibition launches at Guildhall Art Gallery
Exhibition explores the theatre, literature and music which has inspired the visual arts.

Artists find inspiration in many places, often in real-life subjects, such as people or landscapes. However, there’s a wealth of artworks which have grown from the fictional – be it theatre, literature and music. Launching this spring at the Guildhall Art Gallery is a new exhibition which explores the way artists have turned to poetry, plays, novels and music to inspire their work.
A large section of Inspired! will focus on Victorian story-telling. Much of the period’s artwork was nostalgic in reaction to the Industrial Revolution with artists looking back to simpler times, thanks to William Shakespeare‘s works, Medieval folktales and Greek myths. For example, Thomas Lawrence’s portrait of actor John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) as Coriolanus in the Bard’s tragedy. Meanwhile, the burning of Drury Lane Theatre in 1808 was depicted by Abraham Pether’s painting the following year.
For those who enjoy Pre-Raphaelite art, pieces by William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), John Everett Millais (1829-1896) and George Frederic Watts (1817-1904) found inspiration in the Romantic poets and the work of John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle. Also at the exhibition include works inspired by the likes of Sir Walter Scott, Chopin, Joseph Addison, among many others.

Last February was a bit of a wash-out thanks to lockdown, so no doubt many Londoners will be looking forward to getting out and about. This month sees plenty of festivals and exhibitions, including the launch of the Beatrix Potter at the V&A and the return of the Orchid Festival to Kew Gardens.
Of course, halfway through the month is Valentine’s Day so plenty of spaces will be offering romantic events, while others will be giving singles the opportunities to have some fun. During February, expect to see some family-friendly activites and events during half-term.

Lost photographs of The Beatles to go on display in London

Lost images of The Beatles by Lord Christopher Thynne are on show
The Beatles made the transition from rock stars to movie stars in 1964 with the release of their first film A Hard Day’s Night. Both a critical and box office success, the low-budget film was produced in just 16 weeks.
Nearly six decades later, previously unseen photographs of the Fab Four on set of their movie debut are going on display in London. Taken by photographer Lord Christopher Thynne (1934 – 2017) over two days in spring 1964, these pictures spent years as undeveloped negatives until recently. The collection of images not only show John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ringo Starr and George Harrison filming, but also their quieter moments in between takes. Filming was a break from the group from the ‘Beatlemania’ they had just experienced on their first tour of the USA.
Thynne’s photographs will go on display at the Shapero Modern gallery from 9 December 2021 for just five weeks. These unearthed images will also be available for sale for £400-£650 for a limited period.

The hugely-popular Art of Banksy exhibition has been extended until Spring 2022. The world’s largest collection of privately-owned Banksy pieces will continue to be displayed in London after previous stints in world cities, such as Melbourne, Tel Aviv, Toronto and Chicago.
The exhibition has been on show in Covent Garden since May 2021, giving Londoners and visitors to the capital the opportunity to check out over 90 authentic, original pieces by the elusive street artist. Among the artwork from private collections include prints, screen prints, canvasses and limited-edition pieces created between 1997-2008.
Street art aficionados will recognise iconic creations such as ‘Girl with a Balloon’, ‘Rude Copper’ and ‘Brace Yourself’. There is also an installation of six video screens broadcasting a series of interviews with Banksy’s former printer, giving an exclusive insight to working with the famous street artist.
Alongside the exhibition will be private tours by Blue Badge tour guides and school workshops.

Winterfest returns to Wembley Park for 2021 with ‘Reunited in Light’

This winter, Wembley Park’s festive light festival is returning to bring some neon and colour to the dark nights. Following the success of the inaugural Winterfest two years ago, the collection of installations is returning to the streets of HA9 for six weeks. Launching on 25 November 2021, the open-air light trail, themed ‘Reunited in Light’, will be open to the public seven days a week.
The launch of Winterfest will coincide of the switch-on ceremony of London’s largest LED Christmas tree on Wembley Park Boulevard. The 25-metre high, electronic conifer has been decorated with new digital artwork by local Brent artist Yoni Alter, including 100,000 kinetic lights which pulse to different rhythms.
Meanwhile, bespoke light installations will be peppered throughout the entertainment district, through trees, digital totems, lampposts and light banners. ‘Reunion’, a new light installation from Kumquat Lab, will have its world exclusive unveiling in Market Square. The structure features a series of light arches which visitors are invited to walk through and meet under. Joining the collection on 9 December 2021, will be the light installation ‘Reflections of the Future’, offering guests the chance to explore a multi-sensory journey walkway.
Along with the light show, Wembley Park’s new permanent outdoor gallery will launch on Olympic Way with the ‘Reunited in Light’ photography exhibition (25 November 2021 – 27 February 2022). The collection features work from 12 UK-based photographers, including Tami Aftab and Sophie Harris-Taylor.
